Non-Religious Holiday Parade Canceled

Proponents for an alternative, faith-neutral holiday parade have abandoned their push for this year, but will continue to pursue the idea next year. Led by La Jollan Howard Singer, a number of citizens have been striving for years to convince community organizers of the annual Christmas Parade to cease using Christian-based symbols and switch to more inclusive, non-religious holiday themes. As a result, Singer and his supporters announced earlier this year their plan to stage a second holiday parade. The parade was initially slated for December 13th, then moved back a week, before being canceled on Tuesday. Despite opposition from La Jolla Traffic & Transportation the city of San Diego approved a permit for the parade in late November, but there were not enough floats signed up to go forward.
