Officials Warn that El Nino Could Bring Flooding to San Diego County

Tens of thousands of San Diego residents could be affected by heavy rains and flooding during the upcoming El Nino event, according to a report from the National University System Institute for Policy Research, issued Tuesday. Scientists are predicting that this year's El Nino could rival that of 1997, when flooding caused more than $800 million in damages to homes and businesses in the San Diego area. The report shows that about 22,000 San Diego-area homes are located in flood-susceptible areas, and some 55,000 residents and 5,000 businesses could feel the effects of a harsh El Nino. Heavy rains could also impact the tourism and agriculture industries, the report noted, as attendance at Sea World, the zoo and other attractions drops and crops are blown away by heavy wind.
