2014 Rough Water Swim Canceled

Officials announced on Tuesday that the annual La Jolla Rough Water Swim will not take place this because of ongoing construction on the La Jolla Cove lifeguard tower. It will be the first time since 1959 that the race will not be held. A spokesman for the event noted that construction on the lifeguard tower was originally scheduled to be completed by September, when the race was scheduled, but the project has fallen behind schedule and will not be finished in time. According to LJRWS organizers, there were discussions about holding the event at an alternate venue, but the decision to postpone the 84th running until next year was made after input was sought by past participants and members of the organizing committee. The general consensus was that it would be better to wait than to try to put together an event somewhere else and end up with a sub-standard Swim.
